        1. Know and understand basic ICT concepts;
        2. Identify computer parts and peripherals;
        3. Describe the function and purpose of ICT tools.

      Methodology

      This unit will be presented using a blended learning approach. There will be a face to face session during the first day of the ICT Essentials orientation workshop. Access to the resources, tutorials and the final quiz will, however, be from this Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS will be used to distribute materials on computer hardware to provide with you the overall learning pathways. Throughout this course, we will show you important things you need to know about computers, including:

      • How to set up your computer;
      • How to interact with the desktop and operating system;
      • The different types of computers available.

    • Intro

      We live in exciting times where Information Communications Technology (ICT) is the foundation of economies and a driving force of social change in the 21st century. A good example of this is the fact that distance is no longer an issue when it comes to accessing information. For example, working-from-home, engaging in distance learning, and conducting e-banking and e-government transactions are now possible from any place with an internet connection and a computing device.

    • As you work through this unit it is important that understand the difference between Information Technology and Hardware.
      Take a look at the diagram below to see a definition for each of these terms.

  • Basic Parts of a Desktop Computer

    • Intro

      A computer is made up of many parts or components, each with their own special function. It's important that you know what these components are called and what they do so that if there is a problems you can begin to troubleshoot.

    • Create a short presentation that summarises the tutorial's main points on computer parts. You will also need to be able to demonstrate how to use the Snipping Tool to allow the teacher to take screen shots for their presentation. Once you have finished your presentation save it onto your computer and then use the upload button below to submit your presentation.

      1. Take some time to reflect on the 2-3 online tutorials you have read as part of this unit.
      2. Prepare a presentation for the group on, 'The Different Parts of a Computer' and include the following:  the CPU, input/output devices, storage devices, etc.
      3. Use any software package to create a presentation such as a presentation package (e.g. PowerPoint), graphics from the internet, a neatly typed up transcript of your presentation (e.g. a word processor) or perhaps supporting videos from YouTube.
      4. Be prepared to discuss your presentation and share additional knowledge with your peers in the group during the face to face session.
