By the end of this unit you should be able to use ICT to support class administration through the keeping of a digital class record system using a spreadsheet package.
Identify and understand different ICT tools used in school and class administration
This unit will be facilitated during the workshop. However, the resources you require for the unit will be made available here on the LMS. You will also be required to upload your class markbook here too, using the assignment submission tool.

As Rwandan schools adopt new digital technologies it makes sense to also automate much of the school administration. Some school administrators are using school management packages but you can start right here and now and learn to keep your class marks using a spreadsheet. The skills you learn here will help you support digital administration in the future.
In this digital age we now have access to data which was not possible before. This includes data about students and their learning habits, performance and test scores. One of the best way to process all this data about individuals and their educational progress is to use a school management system. This is a software platform that captures the data and provides us with tools to analyze the data. It also provides a number of services such as reporting and timetable making. There are a few that are open source that means have no direct costs, they are free. If your school does not already have one then it’s worth evaluating the two we have here and considering if there is a place in school for such a platform.
You are encouraged to access and do some readings on different school administration packages that outline the merits of such systems. You are encouraged to investigate a few open source platforms that can be used free of charge. In your groups discuss the merits of such software in a forum. You will need to moderate the discussion.
Now let us discuss the importance of ICT in school and demonstration on various ICT tools used for school and class administration in the following areas:
Recording and processing data
Storing and sharing information with others
Capture and store data for informing data-driven decision making
Improve methods of accountability and reporting.
Here are some resources to help you investigate different software packages:
Excel is a spreadsheet program that allows you to store, organize, and analyze information. While you may think that Excel is only used by certain people to process complicated data, anyone can learn how to take advantage of Excel's powerful features. Whether you're keeping a budget, organizing a training log, or creating an invoice, Excel makes it easy to work with different kinds of data.
This activity is a portfolio assignment. Read the instructions below in order to create your own spreadsheet markbook. Make sure it reflects a real class and a real set of term marks.
